You sure can. Some doctors may not offer sedation for exams but many do. Ask yourself or get mom to ask for you. There are a couple different types of sedation available to make your first vaginal exam easier.
Conscious sedation will help you feel relaxed and lazy during the exam. You’ll be awake but you will just let the exam happen. Typically for this type of sedation you’ll swallow a couple pills in the waiting room and by the time you go in you will feel like you are on autopilot.
Midazolam or Versed can be used for heavier sedation. The medication relaxes you but also makes it hard to remember what is happening. You will experience the exam but once its over you won’t be able to recall many details.
General anesthetic is the strongest sedative for an exam. With this method, you will be fully asleep during the exam. This is typically used for extremely nervous patients or those who have been sexually abused. You will be unaware the exam is happening and simply wake up when its all over.
