Tampons are great for girls who enjoy sports or just don’t want to bother with pads. But, they do take a bit of getting used to!

Most girls are teens when they first try tampons. So as a first step, get tampons that indicate they are for teens. These tampons are smaller and easier to fit inside your body. If you are having intercourse on a regular basis, you may want to skip to regular tampons as you will find they are a better fit.

Each box of tampons comes with instructions on how to insert them into your body. The basic idea is to insert the tampon into your birth canal deeply so that it absorbs your period and nothing makes it outside of your body until the tampon is removed several hours later.

If you are on your period, trying a tampon is as simple as getting it inserted.

If you aren’t on your period and want to try anyway – you need one extra step. Before you start, cover the tampon in petroleum jelly. This will allow the tampon to be removed without pain once you are done trying. During your period you should not use petroleum jelly as it stops the tampon from being effective. Your own body will provide the moisture to facilitate removal during your period.

Take your pants and underwear off so you don’t have to try to reach around your clothes. Once you are used to insertion, it will be easy to do without removing them but for now its just one less thing to worry about.

Put one leg on the edge of a bathtub or toilet. If you are right handed, put your left leg up. If you are left handed, raise your right leg. Doing this will cause your birth canal to open slightly internally so that insertion is easier.

With one hand, hold yourself open so that the tampon can rest against the opening of your birth canal. Then, slowly and gently apply pressure. You will feel a sensation of opening up and the tampon will go inside.

Once the applicator has gone in to the point where you can just comfortably use the grip, push the plunger. You will feel pressure deep inside your body and a sudden fullness. This is the feeling of the tampon going into its proper position.

Remove the applicator and get dressed.

Over the next few minutes you will get used to the feeling of a tampon inside your body. Soon, you won’t notice the feeling at all. If you are on your period, you can leave the tampon inside for a few hours. You will start to feel full again when it is time to change it.

If you are practicing while not on your period, leave it inside for an hour at most.

Removal is as simple as again spreading your legs and then gently pulling the string. You will feel the tampon slide down and out. During your period, its useful to catch the tampon with a piece of toilet paper and then dispose of it.
